Favorite Star

Blogging from A to Z Challenge

Theme: Why I watch movies (as if I need a reason)...

Favorite Star

My father's favorite actor was John Wayne. If The Duke was in the movie, dad watched it, and to him they all bore the same title: "John Wayne Movie." (Movie memories with Dad.)

I haven't reached the point where I watch everything my favorite stars are in, but there are some who definitely draw me to see their films. For the sake of length, I'll share only two...

Tom Hanks - I've been a fan since the early 80s when he was on the television series Bosom Buddies, and I've seen most of his films. Such a versatile actor!

Sandra Bullock - She wasn't on my radar until I watched Speed (1994), and I've seen a majority of her work since.
  • On a side note... A few years ago while we were on vacation and dining at a quaint eatery, Sandra Bullock walked in and sat at a table near us. She was as nice as I always imagined she would be. (We learned she owns a home in that area, so out of respect for her privacy I won't mention the location.)
Who is your favorite star?

  1. I have lots of favorites but I'd have to say John Cusack is at the top of my list. I loved him in High Fidelity, Say Anything, Serendipity, Must Love Dogs, The Grifters, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Pushing Tin. My favorite female actress is Meryl Streep ... too many favorite movies to mention but most recently I loved Mama Mia.

So many movies I'd love to watch again.

  2. @Susan ... Yeah, I had difficulty limiting the favorites. I think of Martian Child when I think of John Cusack (good choice!). Meryl Streep... phenomenal.

  3. I like Tom Hanks too. Robert Redford would be another one. As for women, I love Helen Mirren.

  4. Trudy,

You hit on two of my all-time favorite stars. I remember Tom Hanks days on Bosom Buddies. It was hard to imagine him doing anything serious after that show but he won me over in the end and is quite a versatile actor. Speed is a good Sandra Bullock film and I'm not sure which feature she starred in liked the most but I did like The Net. Your mention of John Wayne makes me think of my late in-laws. They were fans of the Duke. He was a fine actor, too. Happy a2zing!

  5. So many 'stars' seem unable to change into the character they are supposedly portraying. Michael Caine is always Michael Caine no matter what name the writers give him! I far prefer watching actors who are unknown to me as I find them more believable. Or actors who can disappear into their roles to the extent they are barely recognisable such as Meryl Streep and Ben Kingsley. Each to their own!

  6. @Janet ... Robert Redford is a definite favorite for me, too. (If I had posted my entire list of favorites!) Loved him in The Sting, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

  7. @Cathy ... I would love to see episodes of Bosom Buddies again. Amazing the show stuck with me when it only aired for two seasons (I think).

  8. @Keith ... There are some "stars" who are my favorite "stars" and some who are favorite "actors/actresses" and Meryl Streep is one of my favorite actresses because of her magnificent talent at becoming the character she portrays.

  9. I can't include anyone young! I don't remember the last movie I went to a theater to see.
I always liked Michael Caine, ever since highschool, maybe before. The Wrong Box, the original Italian Job.
Now I love Sean Bean, but that's partially his looks!
I have more "absolutely" can't stand actors than ones I love! Some ruin an otherwise good movie for me.

  10. @Lisa ... there are some actors who do such a fantastic job in villainous roles that I have a difficult time seeing them in any other role, so in a sense, that ruins other movies they are in because "grrrr" I find myself distrusting and angry at them even if they are portraying a nice person! (Bruce Dern is one.)

  11. I can't think of any film that I didn't like that had your star picks in them. I've always liked Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson in the past. Now I've gained a new respect and appreciation for Hugh Jackman although I've only seen a couple of his films.

There are a lot of character actors that I particularly like--William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, and so many others who I've enjoyed many times but be darned if I can remember what there names are.
