Cinematography

Cinematography

Movieclips Trailers: War Horse (2011)

Sometimes it's the cinematography in a trailer that convinces me a movie is worth seeing.

The first time I consciously made a decision to watch a movie based solely on the cinematography was while watching the trailer for War Horse. I initially had no interest in the movie, but the trailer revealed visually stunning scenes that gave me goosebumps. One moment in particular--a shot of the horse's eye reflects an image of a girl--sealed the deal. I whispered to my husband, "I don't care what the story's about, I want to see that movie!"

(That image is at approximately 1:28 in the above clip.)

If someone wants to feast their eyes upon beautiful pictures in motion, which movie would you recommend?

  1. I suppose The Artist is the film that does it for me, mainly because it's a modern day silent movie. I have in the past been tempted by trailers - that after all is their purpose - only to be disappointed with what I paid to see!

  2. @Keith ... Excellent cinematography! Silent films (modern and classic) rely heavily on visual arts to "tell" the story. Good pick!

  3. Sometimes I think the only good thing about a film is its cinematography, but as you say, that's enough...

  4. @John ... It's great, though, when the story AND the cinematography are equally excellent. Wish there were more of those treasures.

  5. British dramas always have gorgeous cinematography. I find myself watching these bleak, depressing shows just for the views!

Check out Broadchurch, if you you haven't already. It's extra glum, great actors, stunning scenery.

  6. @I.L. Wolf ... That's good to know about British dramas and the cinematography. I'll keep a watch for that, thanks!

  7. I think I saw this movie but I don't remember seeing that shot. Cinematography is definitely a draw. Nicely done.

  8. @Janet ... There's something about reflection shots that amaze me (reflections in glass, water, eyes...). Beautiful.

  9. Janusz Kaminski is a great cinematographer, and has collaborated with Stephen Spielberg many times in addition to War Horse. I immediately thought of Far From Heaven, beautiful autumn scenery, and a good film as well.

  10. @Suzanne ... I've never seen Far From Heaven. I just looked it up at our local library and they have the DVD. Thanks for the recommendation!
