Oscars

Blogging from A to Z Challenge

Theme: Why I watch movies (as if I need a reason)...

Oscars

The Academy Awards mesmerized me as a child. The glitz! The glamour! If the award show was a platform for political agendas, I was blissfully unaware.

Later, I went through a long period of disgruntlement and ignored the show for years... until technology allowed me to record it. I can fast forward through the chunks that don't interest me and get to the best parts... who gets the Oscars, of course, but my favorite sections are the presentation of nominees accompanied by film clips.

Unlike trailers with their broad overview of the films, the Oscar clips for best and supporting actors/actresses focus on specific scenes, usually with dialogue between two people. That intimate focus helps me connect to the characters. By the end of the show, I usually have a reason to watch some of the Oscar nominated films that previously hadn't been on my must-see radar.

  1. I stopped watching the Oscars when everyone used it as a platform to spew their political views.

  2. @John ... Yep, exactly why I stopped watching for a number of years, and exactly why I fast-forward through all the blathering. I wish they would just focus on the talent and skills of filmmaking!

  3. Unforunately, DVDs became my choice of viewing pleasure when attending the theater movies became uncomfortable and expensive (more my snack bill than the ticket.)
I agree the excerpts of movies were a highlight of the show.

  4. @Gail ... When you say theater movies became uncomfortable, I'm not sure if you refer to content or seating. For me, it's the content, so for most Oscar-nominated films (since they tend to go for pushing the envelope), I usually need to wait until I can see a filtered version.

  5. I usually watch for the "In Memoriam" part but I can get most of the show in bits and pieces online after the event. I did watch a little this year as we had seen a few of the nominated movies.

  7. @Janet ... That's a section I never fast forward through... when they honor those who passed away during the year. I'm glad they include that in the show.
