Amusement

Blogging from A to Z Challenge

Theme: Why I watch movies (as if I need a reason)...

Amusement

Don't scoff, and please don't revoke my film degree, but one of the main reasons I watch movies is for sheer amusement. I want entertained. It's that plain and simple.

Edward Zwick (producer, writer, director) said, "As a filmmaker, I want to entertain people first and foremost. If out of that comes a greater awareness and understanding of a time or a circumstance, then the hope is that change can happen."

Agreed. As a viewer, I want amused--entertained--first and foremost, and if I become enlightened in the process, well, that is a delightful and appreciated bonus.

How about you... do you watch movies for amusement?

  1. Hi Trudy - I'm not doing the A-Z this year ... but am popping occasionally. I love going to the movies - but go for edutainment ... our local film society brings down excellent films - so I've been spoilt. Just been to see the Fishermen's Friends - fishermen and lifeboatmen - who sang sea shanties et al ... but then were 'found', signed a record deal and now a film ... very Cornish, very British ... but great fun - cheers Hilary

  2. I can't think of any other reason I'd watch a movie, besides for entertainment, for amusement! I don't watch to be in on the latest, to be able to discuss the newest releases. I watch what I will get enjoyment from.
Others may find my favorites "bad," but that's okay with me. If I'm entertained the movie did its job!

  4. Happy first day of A-Z! I watch movies for amusement, entertainment, and for researching plot and character development. I'll try to come back for R and see if you do too.

  5. Trudy,

I totally agree I'm in it for the amusement solely and the quickest way to lose my interest is when the filmmaker forces his/her agenda on me. That's not amusing in the least. Your theme sounds interesting. I'm anxious to see where the other letters will go in this series. Welcome back to blogging and thank you for checking out my first Little Mermaid Art Sketch series feature with ARIEL!

  6. I like movies to take me to another place for a couple of hours; to excite amuse and entertain. A-Z posts too! Nice start.

  7. ABSOLUTELY. I think entertainment should be entertaining, and my standards have definitely changed over the years.

And I've found I now prefer watching movies at home. I can watch them at my pace, and give up if I feel like it (like I recently did with "The Meg.")

  9. @Lisa... I was amazed at how many "reasons" I came up with for watching movies, thus leading to my A to Z theme this year.

I followed the link to your blog... I love the poem "April Blogging"!

  10. @Susan... I was so happy to see your comment! As you've let me know in the past, you were not able to leave comments for some reason. Did it help that I switched to using the pop-up comment format? I miss being able to reply directly to people's comments, but if it means it's easier for you to interact it's totally worth it!

  11. @T.S. Valmond... Thanks a lot, now I have another R reason to choose from. I was already oscillating between two and you added a third (research). hahaha! I popped over to your blog real quick to check you out. Interesting posts! I will be back for sure!

  12. @Cathy... Agreed! It's very annoying when filmmakers force their agenda. I want to be informed, but I don't want issues pushed at me, I don't want to feel lectured.

I look forward to your A to Z sketches!

  17. I usually watch films for amusement. Recently I've seen some disappointing films that didn't amuse me that much. Then again I've seen some wonderful ones.

  18. @Arlee ... For sure, some films aren't amusing. Sometimes after seeing a bunch of not-so-amusing films, I get discouraged. Then along comes a fantastic film and it seems like a treasure.
