Zee End.

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

Zee End

(Read like a phony foreign accent, "Zee End.")

We are at "zee end" of the 2016 A to Z Challenge, so here are some favorite last lines -- lines at "zee end" of the film.

Gone With the Wind (1939)...

SCARLETT (Vivien Leigh)
Tara! Home. I'll go home, and I'll think of some way
to get him back! After all, tomorrow is another day!

JOHN L. SULLIVAN (Joel McCrea)
There's a lot to be said for making people laugh!
Did you know that's all some people have?
It isn't much, but it's better than
nothing in this cockeyed caravan! Boy!

The Quiet Man (1952)

MICHALEEN FLYNN (Barry Fitzgerald)
No patty fingers, if you please.
The proprieties at all times.
Hold on to your hats.

BUTCH CASSIDY (Robert Redford)
Oh, good. For a moment there,
I thought we were in trouble.

The Sting (1973)

HENRY GONDORFF (Paul Newman)
You not gonna stick around for your share?

JOHNNY HOOKER (Robert Redford)
Naah. I'd only blow it.

DR. EMMETT BROWN (Christopher Lloyd)
Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

MOSES (Bill Cobbs)
And that's the story of how Norville Barnes
climbed waaay up to the forty-fourth floor
of the Hudsucker Building, and then fell
all the way down, but didn't quite squish
hisself. You know, they say there was a man
who jumped from the forty-FIFTH floor?
But that's another story...

Spider-Man (2002)

PETER PARKER (Tobey Maguire)
Whatever life holds in store for me,
I will never forget these words:
"With great power comes great
responsibility." This is my gift.
My curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-Man.

The Help (2011)

AIBILEEN CLARK (Viola Davis)
God says we need to love our enemies.
It hard to do. But it can start by telling
the truth. No one had ever asked me
what it feel like to be me. Once I told
the truth about that, I felt free.
And I got to thinking about all the
people I know. And the things I seen
and done. My boy Trelaw always said
we gonna have a writer in the family
one day. I guess it's gonna be me.

You hate them compared to how much I like them.

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

"You hate them compared to how much I like them."

The following is one of my favorite scenes in Madagascar (2005). The lemurs gather in a meeting and discuss the four escaped New York zoo animals (which they refer to as New York Giants) who ended up in Madagascar.

JULIEN (Sacha Baron Cohen, voice)
Curiosity about our guests,
the New York Giants...
(calls on a lemur)
...Yes, Willie!

WILLIE (Cody Cameron, voice)
I like them!

MORT (Andy Richter, voice)
I like them! I like them!
I liked them first. Before I even
met them, I liked them!
I saw them, I liked them right away.
You hate them compared to
how much I like them!

My husband is a competitive guy and can turn just about anything into a competition. When I say, "I love you," he responds with, "I love you more."

And I'm telling you right now, don't sit next to him during a game of Uno unless you can tolerate someone slamming a Draw Four on the card pile with a shout of, "Die, Sucker!"

So, yes, this line is a favorite of his.

Me: I like that raspberry jam.
Him: You hate that jam compared to how much I like it.

Me: I enjoy Sunday afternoon naps.
Him: I enjoy naps! You hate naps compared to how much I enjoy them!

Me: I love the beach.
Him: I loved it first! Before I even met the beach, I loved it. You hate the beach compared to how much I love it!

Good thing I love the guy. I know it's all in fun and we laugh together over it, otherwise I would be tempted to respond in the same way King Julien responds to Mort, "Oh, shut up! You're so annoying!"

X never, ever marks the spot.

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

"X never, ever marks the spot."

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989):

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) tells his university students, "X never, ever marks the spot." Then later he follows Roman Numerals 1 through 10 to a vital clue beneath the 10... a huge X.

Wouldn't it be nice in the journey of life if X marked the spot, indicating we have arrived, or we're at least on the right track?

And a huge X might come in handy when searching for lost keys, misplaced reading glasses, or where we parked the car.

But alas, Indiana's initial observation seems correct, "X never, ever marks the spot."

Whoa. Is my hair out?

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

"Whoa. Is my hair out?"

Fire burns atop Hade's head in Hercules (1997). In one scene, Hades (voice of James Woods) shouts orders, "Guys! Get your Titanic rears in gear and kick some Olympian butt!" As he shouts, Pegasus flies up behind him and blows the blue flame out. Hades reaches up to his bare scalp, asking, "Whoa. Is my hair out?"

One night our family ate at Subway where my husband had a sandwich with extra jalapeños causing his head to sweat. Afterwards, as we walked to the car, a streetlight cast him in silhouette allowing us to see the heat vapors rising from his bald head!

When the kids and I explained our laughter, he looked at his reflection in the car window and quipped, "Whoa. Is my hair out?"

Villainous lines.

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

Villainous Lines

Sometimes we want perpetually smooth lives, but a good story needs an antagonist--someone (or something) that gets in the way of the of the protagonist's goal. Villains play a vital role in films, mwahaha, and although I usually don't make their lines my own, they often have memorable dialogue:

(In alphabetical order)

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)...
(Click here for "My Take")

ULTRON (James Spader)
I know you're good people.
I know you mean well.
But you just didn't think it through.
There is only one path to peace...
your extinction.

Batman (1989)

THE JOKER (Jack Nicholson)
Ever danced with the Devil
in the pale moonlight?

Batman Returns (1992)...

PENGUIN (Danny DeVito)
They wouldn't put me on a pedestal,
so I'm layin' 'em on a slab!

YZMA (voice of Eartha Kitt)
I'll turn him into a flea, a harmless
little flea, and then I'll put that flea
in a box, and then I'll put that box
inside another box, and then I'll
mail that box to myself, and
when it arrives...
(laughs)
...I'll smash it with a hammer!
It's brilliant, brilliant, brilliant,
I tell you! Genius I say!...
...Or, to save on postage, I'll just
poison him with this.

The Help (2011)...

Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard)
I specifically said, "Drop old coats
at my house", not commodes!

The Incredibles (2004)...

SYNDROME (Jason Lee)
Oh, ho ho! You sly dog!
You got me monologuing!
I can't believe it...

JAVERT (Russell Crowe)
And I'm Javert! Do not forget
my name. Do not forget me, 24601.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)...

SARUMAN (Christopher Lee)
Hunt them down. Do not stop
until they are found. You do not
know pain, you do not know fear.
You will taste man-flesh.

SHERIFF OF NOTTINGHAM (Alan Rickman)
Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers
and orphans, no more merciful
beheadings, and call off Christmas.

¡Three Amigos! (1986)...

EL GUAPO (Alfonso Arau)
Well, you told me I have a plethora.
And I just would like to know if you
know what a plethora is. I would not
like to think that a person would tell
someone he has a plethora, and then
find out that that person has "no idea"
what it means to have a plethora.

Unfamiliar Films

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

Unfamiliar Films

Sometimes called "sleepers," film critic Leonard Maltin defines unfamiliar films as "any movie that failed to find a large audience." I discussed his book 151 Best Movies You've Never Seen as I kicked off last year's (2015) A to Z Challenge in a post titled Audience. At that time, I had only seen three of the 151 little-known films, but I have since watched several more, bringing my total to nine.

In keeping with my theme for this year's challenge, here are lines of dialogue from those nine "unfamiliar" films.

(I've written "My Take" on some of these, and have included links to those reviews.)

In alphabetical order...

The Great Buck Howard (2008)...

BUCK HOWARD (John Malkovich)
That's distilled water. I am not an iron.

The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005)...

FRANCIS OUIMET (Shia LaBeouf)
All I want is a chance.

Hidalgo (2004)...

FRANK T. HOPKINS (Viggo Mortensen)
Get out of here mister. Leave me be.

YUSEF (Harsh Nayyar)
This is not possible... I was charged with
the crime of stealing milk.
As punishment I have been assigned
to the American and his horse.

FRANK T. HOPKINS
You're working for me?

YUSEF
It was this or be removed of my left hand.
The future will tell if I have chosen poorly.

Matchstick Men (2003)...

ROY (Nicolas Cage)
For some people, money is... money is
a foreign film without subtitles.

The Mighty (1998)...

KEVIN (Kieran Culkin)
Think of it as a business partnership:
you need brains, and I need legs --
and the Wizard of Oz doesn't
live in South Cincinnati.

October Sky (1999)...

O'DELL (Chad Lindberg)
God's honest truth, Homer. What are the
chances... a bunch of kids from Coalwood...
actually winning the National Science Fair?

A million to one, O'Dell.

O'DELL
That good? Well, why didn't you say so?

One Fine Day (1996)...

JACK TAYLOR (George Clooney)
My attitude is derived from your attitude.

MELANIE PARKER (Michelle Pfeiffer)
"Derived", you must be a writer.

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (2005)...

EVELYN RYAN (Julianne Moore)
You know what the worst part of it is?

MRS. BIDLACK (Susan Merson)
What?

EVELYN RYAN
A quart of milk got
sucked up inside my girdle.

The World's Fastest Indian (2005)...
WARREN (Tim Farmer)
These brakes, they're completely inadequate.

BURT MUNRO (Anthony Hopkins)
I'm planning on going, not stopping.

Were any of these films unfamiliar to you?

(As with any film, I encourage checking parental guides before viewing. A list of helpful links are posted on the side of this blog.)

That'll do, pig.

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

"That'll do, pig."

A difficulty with artistic projects--writing, photographing, filming, editing--is knowing when enough is enough. I get caught up in tweaking and re-tweaking. Adjusting this, changing that. Still, with subjective undertakings it can never be perfect.

So sometimes, borrowing a line from Farmer Hoggett (James Cromwell) in Babe (1995), I tell myself, "That'll do, pig. That'll do."

Serendippadee-doo-dah.

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

"Serendippadee-doo-dah."

A Goofy Movie (1995):

Goofy and his son Max set up camp, then along comes a thunderous motorhome. It's ridiculously loaded with every luxury, including a swimming pool. A door lowers, knocking Goofy in the head, and Pete exits. Seeing Goofy, Pete calls the "chance" meeting serendippadee-doo-dah.

Pete is not my favorite character, but I love that phrase. When overloaded with stress, I tell my husband, "I need a Serendippadee-doo-dah Day!"

Meaning... a day where I wake up and do whatever I darn well please... go with the flow... no demands, no appointments. If I feel like reading, I read. If I feel like watching TV, I watch it. If I feel like cooking... riiiiight... like that's gonna happen on a Serendippadee-doo-dah Day!

(This is the third time I've used a line from A Goofy Movie. See: G'bye pile of broken wood, and Quirky Lines Quiz.

Riiiight.

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

"Riiiiight."

I love the sound of Patrick Warburton's voice, so I get a kick out of Kronk, the character he lends voice to in The Emperor's New Groove (2000). In this scene, Yzma (voice of Eartha Kitt) reminds Kronk to serve a poisoned drink to the emperor.

YZMA
Kronk, the emperor needs his...drink!

KRONK
Drink...
(winks)
Riiiiight.

He says "riiiiight" a couple times in this clip, once approximately 45 seconds in, and again around 1:35....

Kronk's "riiiiight" indicates he understands, gets the message, but our family uses it to tease uh huh, sure, get real, like that's ever going to happen...

For instance...

I'm going for a run.
Riiiiight.

This task will only take a minute.

Riiiiight

I can prepare the remaining A to Z posts during the four days I stay with grandkids.
Riiiight.

Quirky Lines Quiz

Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
Theme: Making movie lines our own.

Quirky Lines Quiz

How many movies you can identify by these quirky lines? (Answers at the bottom.)

And since we're on the topic of quirky, it seems appropriate to start with...

1. No. You're quirky. Quirky and weird are two different things.

2. You got to put your behind in your past.

3. I pretended that baseball glove was a bicycle, and rode it to school every day. True Story.

4. A hotdog is singing. You need quiet while a hotdog is singing?

5. Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face!

6. (singing) Spider-pig, Spider-pig. Does whatever a spider-pig does.

7. This ain't a bridge. It's termites holding hands!

8. Hey...I've been turned into a cow. Can I go home?

9. How many cups of sugar does it take to get to the moon?

10. You're out with a guy, you find him attractive, and suddenly everything he says sounds brilliant. Hairy legs are your only link to reality.

11. Nobody knows [my last name]. Do you know why? Because my character isn't important enough for a last name, because I'm gonna die five minutes in.

12. You've been so good to me... well, except that time you fed me spiders.

13. I haven't done laundry in six months. One pair lasts me four days. I go front, I go back, I go inside out, then I go front and back.

14. I'm packing you an extra pair of shoes, and your angry eyes, just in case.

15. I'm not crazy, I've just been in a very bad mood 40 years.

16. But pretty soon, a woobie isn't enough. You're out on the street trying to score an electric blanket, or maybe a quilt. And the next thing you know, you're strung out on bedspreads.

17. Was that a tear? How do you people do it? Do you poke yourself in the eye? Or are you thinking right now "My dog is dead"?

18. I got it! Your daughter's not your daughter, and the cash that used to be the jewels is now your underwear!

19. Visitors... Do you mind if I fetch my teeth?

20. Over the years I got to be quite a connoisseur of soap. My personal preference was for Lux, but I found Palmolive had a nice, piquant after-dinner flavor -- heady, but with just a touch of mellow smoothness.

Bonus Question:
What memorable line of movie dialogue begins with the letter Z? (Hey! I need help, okay?)

1. Runaway Bride (1999), Peggy Fleming...not the ice skater.
2. The Lion King (1994), Pumba
3. Bolt (2008), The Agent
4. You've Got Mail (1998), Frank Navasky
5. Uncle Buck (1989), Buck Russell
6. The Simpson's Movie (2007), Homer
7. Funny Farm (1988), Mickey (mover)
8. The Emperor's New Groove (2000), A guard
9. A Goofy Movie (1995), Goofy
10. Return to Me (2000), Megan Dayton
11. Galaxy Quest (1999), Guy Fleegman
12. Maleficent (2014), Princess Aurora
13. Big Hero 6 (2014), Wasabi
14. Toy Story 2 (1999), Mrs. Potato Head
15. Steel Magnolias (1989), Ouiser Boudreaux
16. Mr. Mom (1983), Jack Butler
17. The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997), Wallace Ritchie
18. Oscar (1991), Connie
19. Bridge of Spies (2015), Rudolph Abel
20. A Christmas Story (1983), Ralphie (as an adult)
