Movies reflect human needs: Nourishment

Blogging from A to Z Challenge

Nourishment

Humans can't survive without food--it's a vital need. Some movies I recently watched portray how food sustains life...
But food can nourish more than our bodies, it can provide comfort, add to celebrations, bring people together.

The service of food is to nurture, to please, to nourish. (Lidia Bastianich

As chefs, we cook to please people, to nourish people. (José Andrés)

In these films, food isn't just a means of survival... it's art, it's love, it's connection, it's meant to be savored, it nourishes souls.
Okay, I might be a bit obsessed with food!

Hungry for more?

In 2017, I used Food in Film for my A to Z theme. Here are those posts:

What's your favorite type of food? Do you have a go-to comfort food? Are there certain foods that seem like a party in your mouth when you eat? Do you enjoy cooking?

(Note: The movies listed might not be completely family-friendly. See my "Movie Content" information on the blog's sidebar.)

  1. I don't cook, my husband does and he is much better than me ;)) I love to eat, and my comforting kind of food is sweets. Chocolate ;))

  2. I'm feeling rather peckish now! A few of those I would like to have: hot dog, chocolate - all the unhealthy stuff! My film & food tip is to watch out for Brad Pitt in his films - he almost always has a scene where he eats - he is one of the great eating actors :-)

    1. Now I'm hungry, too! Good thing it's almost lunchtime here.

I saw a youtube video showing Brad Pitt eating in various movies. Amazing.

  3. You have two of my favourites in your list today, Chocolat and Big Fat Greek Wedding - they're both wonderful. I'm going to add in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the modern one, and all those sweets are a dream come true.
It is interesting how food can play such a pivotal role in so many stories, but I guess that's because it is more than just physical nourishment, it also has an emotional connection.

    1. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Thanks for adding that.

There's definitely an emotional connection to food for me... I have to be careful about emotional eating.

  4. Great list of movies. Loved the Martian and Julie and Julia. Now I have to go back and read all your food posts. LOL. No pie in films?

    1. I had fun writing the Food in Film posts. That was one of my favorite themes! Sorry, I didn't use pie for the letter P, though. (I'm sure there are films that have pie, I just chose to go with pancakes.)

  5. I love the Martian. Such a great movie.

If picking a favorite food, I'd have to go with Lobster. It's local and delicious.

    1. Mmmmm... I loooove lobster!! I had some in Maine, years ago (1986-ish), but I can't recall the location. Somewhere between Bangor and Portland. It was a quick trip, but I made sure to stop for lobster at a seafood restaurant!

  6. I enjoy baking more than I do cooking, and am always trying out new gluten free recipes. So I naturally thought of pie, and the quirky film "Waitress." The main character Jenna is also a pie baker, and each pie is named after her emotions over things going on in her life. Clever movie, and a few of those pies looked good enough to eat!

    1. I actually thought about Waitress when Janet asked, "No pie in films?" But perhaps because I had to write an essay about that film while in school, it left a bad taste in my mouth and I couldn't recommend it! hahaha! Maybe I need to give it another try.

  7. Babette's Feast is a terrific movie, I may have seen it twice because I really like the idea of people getting together just to have a meal and not necessarily doing anything insightful, just sharing the same food.

I don't have a favorite food. In fact, it's easier to say what food I don't like then to say what I do like.

    Have a lovely day.

    My A-Z posts are here.

    1. The scenes of food preparation for that meal, as well as the dining, are fantastic, right? I was intrigued by it all. The care and love and art that went into the cooking, and the connection felt by those who feasted. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days after watching the movie.

  8. Trudy,

I tend to bury my woes in food which then makes me doubly woeful because of the calories I ate. My favorite cuisine is Mexican and my favorite sweet treat is ice cream. I do enjoy cooking and have come to like it a lot since pandemic hit for which I'm grateful. Out of bad situation came something wonderful - a new passion. I had to check out the link for donuts as that's DH favorite thing to eat but he won't turn down cake or pie or just about anything sweet. :D

    1. I can relate to the woes that come from consuming too many calories. I struggle with having a healthy relationship with food.

Sounds like you took your enjoyment of cooking to another level during the pandemic. Is it more of an art form to you now?
