Gallows humor.

Blogging from A to Z Challenge

Theme: Humor in film -- what makes me laugh:

Gallows humor.

Gallows humor by definition means "humor that makes fun of a life-threatening, disastrous, or terrifying situation." There's a lot of that going on right now as people around the world share COVID-19 memes to laugh in the face of a truly serious situation. It's a wonderful coping tool.

I have a greeting card with this printed on the front:
I used to live each day as if it were my last, but people got tired of me screaming, "I'm Going to Die!! I'm Going to Die!!"
Although I have a morbid sense of humor at times, I'm not usually drawn to dark comedy films. However, I do get a kick out of comedic dark dialogue.

For example:

The Princess Bride (1987) (in reference to a torture machine):

COUNT RUGEN (Christopher Guest)
Westley's got his strength back.
I'm starting him on the machine tonight.

PRINCE HUMPERDINCK (Chris Sarandon)
Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work,
but I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan,
my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder, and
Guilder to frame for it. I'm swamped.

COUNT RUGEN
Get some rest. If you haven't got your health,
you haven't got anything.

Back to the Future Part III (1990)

BUFORD "MAD DOG" TANNEN (Thomas F. Wilson)
Then let's finish it, right now!

GANG MEMBER #1
Uh, not now, Buford. Uh, Marshal's got our guns.

BUFORD "MAD DOG" TANNEN
Like I said, we'll finish this tomorrow.

GANG MEMBER #2
Tomorrow, we're robbin' the Pine City Stage.

BUFORD "MAD DOG" TANNEN
What about Monday? Are we doing' anything Monday?

GANG MEMBER #1
Un, no, Monday'd be fine. You can kill him on Monday.

BUFORD "MAD DOG" TANNEN
I'll be back this way on Monday!
We'll settle this then...

SHERIFF OF NOTTINGHAM (Alan Rickman)
Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers
and orphans, no more merciful
beheadings, and call off Christmas.

Do you have a morbid sense of humor?

Have you found humor in this (or any other) serious situation?

  1. LOL I can just hear Alan Rickman saying "Call off Christmas." Hopefully that won't have to happen!

  2. @Janet ... After seeing Alan Rickman portray the bad guy in this and in Quigley Down Under, it was difficult for me to view him as a good guy when I saw him in Sense and Sensibility!

  3. Not everyone would like the comedy Bad Santa with Billy Bob Thornton, but I find its humor dark and yet funny. This loser of a guy playing Santa in stores during the holiday season is about the worst person to play the jolly man in the red suit, and how he treats people leaves a lot to be desired. Yet, I find it hilarious!

  4. @Sue ... After reading your comment, I watched the trailer for Bad Santa... and laughed. What a character. Dark humor for sure. (It was sad, though, seeing a glimpse of John Ritter. I miss him!)
