Integrity

Yes, integrity is on the list of universal human needs.
Integrity means that you are the same in public as you are in private. (Joyce Meyer)
When I was a young single gal applying to rent an apartment, the landlord was hesitant to rent it to me because he'd had a bad experience with other renters my age. But, he looked over my completed application and when he saw my name, it turned out he knew my father. The man told me, "He is a man of integrity and I know he would raise you the same. The apartment is yours."

You better believe I always paid the rent promptly and took care of the property. I didn't want to reflect poorly on his view of my dad!

Here are some movies reflecting integrity, and some reflecting the lack of it...

Big Eyes (2014)
  • A man takes credit for his wife's paintings. (Based on a true story.)
  • An Olympic athlete, a devout Christian, stays true to his beliefs and refuses to race on a Sunday. (Based on a true story.)
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
  • A young man's religious convictions keep him from carrying a rifle into combat, and despite the bullying and abuse he takes from other soldiers, he stands for what he believes is right. (Based on a true story.) (I used this film in a post about loving your enemies, found here.)
  • After dining in a cafe, a man realizes he doesn't have enough money to tip the waitress, so he reveals a lottery ticket and promises that if he wins, he will split the money with her. Will he keep that promise?
  • During a golf competition, a man's ball moves ever so slightly as he removes a twig next to it. He is determined to add a penalty stroke, even when others encourage him to ignore it.
  • Although Edward (Hugh Grant) is deeply attracted to Elinor Dashwood (Emma Thompson), he made an engagement promise to another, years prior, and feels duty-bound to follow through with that commitment.
The Words (2012)
  • A writer steals another man's work and it comes with a steep price.

What movies come to your mind regarding integrity?

  1. I love Chariots of Fire, mainly for the music and some of it was filmed in Scotland. He had great integrity, although given the way the world has gone, it seems such a strange thing to give up his dreams, but he certainly had integrity.

    1. When I saw Chariots of Fire, I hadn't been to Scotland yet. I wonder if I would recognize any of the locations now, since visiting your beautiful country in 2019.

  2. I love Jane Austen but initially did not warm up to Sense and Sensibility although on repeated viewings I changed my opinion. Weekends In Maine

    1. I went on a Jane Austen movie binge in 2019. Then later that year, I visited her house in Chawton, England. Loved it!

  3. My mother-in-law had one of the Big Eye paintings and she gave it to our son. I have yet to see the movie but it's on my list.

    1. I had two of her framed prints when I was young, but I didn't know the story behind her artwork until the movie was released.

    1. Thank you for your comment. I'm so glad you included the link to your post about Eric! He was such a good man.

  5. Spoiler alert! I thought of "Pride and Prejudice" (the version with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy). Mr. Darcy shows integrity when he helps the Bennet family avoid scandal, and his integrity helps him win the heart of Elizabeth.

    1. Oooo! Excellent example... Mr. Darcy has integrity... and it's something the scoundrel Wickham lacks.

  6. Trudy,

I remember a day when kids didn't want to bring shame on their parents' good name such as you. It's not like that anymore it seems. *sigh* You listed some good movies. I watched Big Eyes, a movie I normally wouldn't fall for but since it was based on an artist's life and I was just getting into it myself I was drawn to film. I'm glad I watched it. We saw It Could Happen to You. I really can't remember a whole lot about the film now. I think we liked it, though. The rest of your picks we haven't seen. I think The Words might be movie checking out. I need to see where we can stream it. I know we've watched some films over the years that are perfect fit for your subject but I can't think of any of them now.

    1. I wonder if we'd see more examples of integrity if those were the stories covered by the news?

I had two Big Eyes prints years ago, so out of curiosity, I watched the movie when it came out. And I watched it again in March when preparing for this post.
