Food in Film: Lobster

Blogging from A to Z Challenge

A food addict and connoisseur of tasteful films reviews Food in Film, starring...

Lobster

A few years ago, our daughter and son-in-law took an honest look at the their Thanksgiving meal and accepted that neither of them enjoy turkey and the traditional trimmings. They wondered why they were wasting their time and money on foods they didn't like. From that point on, they broke away from tradition and now their yearly feast features lobster.

They use a Better Homes and Gardens recipe: Broiled Lobster Tails with Garlic-Chili Butter. I'm glad the recipe is for the lobster tail. I have never cooked live lobster and probably never will.

In Julie & Julia (2009), Julie (Amy Adams) cooks her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French CookingThis scene validates my live-lobster squeamishness.

Scene: Julie cooks live lobsters.

I love lobster and it feels appropriate to say I "love" it since I don't abuse it. I don't eat lobster very often, and I don't over-eat it when I do. Every bite gets savored, and brings satisfaction.

Therein lies a key for me... when I take time to actually taste the food and savor it, I feel satisfied and eat less. I mentioned in yesterday's post that I want to learn to be finickier, like a cat, and only eat foods that taste amazing. Well, our daughter is like that, and I want my tastebuds to be like hers when they grow up.

  1. I loved Julie & Julia! Great film and great scene with the lobster. Being from Maine and growing up with a lobsterman grandfather, I am not quite as squeamish about lobsters. I do savor every little bit of each and every one!
Love that you hope to grow up to be like your daughter - I've wished the same for me and my daughter!

    1. Mmmm. Maine has great lobsters! With a lobsterman grandfather, did you have lobster often?

  2. I am with you, I want to only eat foods I really enjoy. I wish I had a personal chef to make me lovely grilled fish and salads and other healthy, tasty fare and once a week some sort of decadent dessert!

  3. Lobster is my absolute favorite but I've always understood that if it's not something you grew up with it might be a little intimidating. WeekendsInMaine

    1. I grew up helping my brothers skin deer and cleaning fish but I never cooked anything live. Eeeeeeeek. Crazy, huh!

  4. I've never tried lobster myself, but I'll never forget the scene in Herbie where the girl lobsters the villain's nephew.
    Lobster in film. Classy.

    1. Lobsters can add fun moments in the movies. It was tough deciding which movie scene to use!

  5. I've only cooked live lobsters once. We had them shipped to our home. I can't remember the last time I ate one. Maybe on a trip to Nova Scotia ten years ago. I do make a killer lobster mac and cheese and buy canned lobster at Whole Foods.

  6. At first I thought this was going to be about the film Lobster. One of the weirdest films I have ever seen. They didn't eat any shellfish as far as I remember.

I don't enjoy lobster (in a bisque it is fine) - too much work for too little reward!

    1. Oooo... I love lobster bisque! My husband would agree with you about too much work for too little reward. Especially when it comes to crab. He's okay with lobster tail if it's served with the meat above the shell, ready to eat.

I've never seen the film Lobster. Maybe I'll pass on that one.

  7. I don't get lobster very often and have never fixed it at home. Recently I've had lobster a few times at Red Lobster during their "Lobster Fest" promotion. Maybe not the best, but it's not bad. Lobster is a bit expensive for frequent dining, but I sure do like it. Oddly, my wife doesn't care for it, but she loves shrimp.

    1. Lobster can be expensive, for sure! We had friends who regretted introducing their teenagers to lobster. Their restaurant bills increased dramatically after that. For me, it is a "special occasion" food.
