Food in Film: Watermelon

Blogging from A to Z Challenge

A food addict and connoisseur of tasteful films reviews Food in Film, starring...

… Watermelon

When I eat watermelon, I put a slice on my plate, take my fruit spoon and start on the outer edge and keep working my way around the melon until I finally get to the best bite... the heart. The laaaast bite.

The Dodos in Ice Age (2002) fight for the laaaaast melon:

Scene: The laaaaast melon.

I am selfish with my food, and I save the best for last. As my husband can attest, don't ask for my last bite. When we were newly married, he asked for my last bite of cottage cheese and pineapple. I feigned serving it to him on my spoon but quickly swooped it back to my mouth and ate in delight.

It started our first fight.

Unbeknownst to me, he was testing my love based on that bite."If you truly loved me, you would have given me your last bite!" My argument, "If you truly loved me you wouldn't ask for my last bite!"

It was also our first lesson in marriage. "Tests" of love almost always fail. If we look for signs that our spouse doesn't love us, we will find them. If we look for signs that our spouse does love us, we can find those, too.

We've been married 37 years. He accepts my food possessiveness. He doesn't snitch food off my plate, and doesn't ask for--but sometimes I willingly offer--my laaaaaaast bite.

  1. I'm not sharing either and love has got nothing to do with it. Unless it is my love for food, lol.

  2. Great story. That's how good marriages work. Respect for the other, whether it's their last bite or their desire for alone time.

  3. I also like to save the best bites for last. My wife and I don't mess with each others plates unless invited to do so which we often do.

Lately watermelon has been on sale at the supermarket so I've been buying a lot of the personal small melons which are still big enough for two of us. A big size watermelon is too much for the two of us.

    1. We have yet to get our first watermelon of the season this year. I've seen them in the grocery store but wondered if they were good. It's nice having the smaller ones available.

    1. Yes, in so many aspects of life, we find what we look for... except, it seems, when I lose something. ;-)

  5. I'm not for sharing, especially not a big juicy melon! Perhaps that's where I went wrong.

  6. Hi Trudy - congratulations on those 37 years ... wonderful ...but I don't like sharing either, or having it whipped off my plate - the best bits are mine ... I chose the food!! Cheers Hilary

Love watermelon - don't often have it ... I remember cooling them off in the swimming pool in South Africa ...

    1. I've cooled watermelons in a river before, but not a swimming pool.

Here's to saving the best bites for last!

  7. Reminds me of episode of both 'Friends' ( Joey doesn't) and 'Seinfeld' where food sharing is the deal breaker.
And yes, I'm a best bit till last person too.

    1. It's a good thing my husband didn't ask for my last bite when we were engaged, or it might have been a deal breaker! Whew.

  8. Trudy,

DH is far better at sharing his food with me than I am with him. He's such a sweetheart. I try to do it when I think to but that's the problem I have to think of it and with him it's so natural. I really lucked out with this guy! We'll celebrate 38 years next month. I love watermelon but DH is allergic to it, so I don't buy it very often because I'm left to eat the whole thing. I didn't get one last season but I hope to buy one this year. That should hold me over for a couple of years. :)

    1. My husband loves watermelon, too, so we have no problem eating one, especially if it's small. We used to get such juicy sweet watermelons when we lived in Tennessee!
