Food in Film: Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Grilled cheese sandwich

While snooping through a kitchen gadget store recently, I bought a set of "toaster bags" designed to prepare grilled cheese sandwiches with no butter or oil needed. Just put the cheese between two slices of bread, put it inside the bag, and slide it into the toaster. Ta-dah. Out comes a non-greasy toasted cheese sandwich. But, alas, out goes the finger-licking taste of the grilled bread.

After realizing I missed the grilled-ness, I tried to butter one side of my toasted sandwich. Still wasn't tasty. A grilled cheese fail.

Maybe Jack (Michael Keaton) could have revived my un-grilled cheese sandwich! (Mr. Mom, 1983)

Scene: Jack reheats the grilled cheese sandwich.

I think an iron would have been a better kitchen gadget than my new toaster bags.

Do you have any regretted kitchen gadgetry?

  1. Yaaasss!!!! Grilled cheese!! love love love.

You can actually sign up for a grilled cheese subscription box (at least in the UK) which I had for a while.
They provided those toaster bags you mention and I actually really like how it tastes cooked in them!
I still butter both sides of my bread before putting them in the bag though. And I don't like overly greasy things...

    1. Whaaaat?? You can use butter on the bread when using those bags? I will look at my instructions again! You may have saved those bags from being tossed out.

    2. You most certainly can! I've never used them without buttering the bread first, but I imagine it to be a bit bland!
I hope you find them more delicious now!

  2. You wouldn't think a cheese-fail was even possible, would you?
But I'd be right there with you in the "disappointed" line on this one.
(Have you tried spreading mayo on the bread instead of butter? That's pretty tasty, too.)

    Happy A-Z!

    1. I tried using mayo... once. I'm a fan of butter, though, so it's my go-to in all things sandwich. :-)

  3. I love Grilled Cheese Sandwich, hot from the toaster!
    Great for snacks! Filling too:)
I had an electric toaster where once a part of the sandwich got stuck and in that portion the Teflon coating came off. Discarded the machine...

    1. I would have discarded the machine too! It would have joined the other pans I've tossed with Teflon peeling off.

    1. Mmmmm... sour dough. Now I'm hungry for that. Thanks a lot! ;D

  5. The kitchen gadget I most regret was one of those little hand-held things that allegedly re-sealed bags.

Note the use of the word allegedly ... because it did no such thing.

I love a good grilled cheese. High quality multi-grain bread (buttered on the outside) and an excellent cheddar are my favorite combination.

    1. You just described my favorite grilled cheese sandwich. Multi-grain bread and cheddar. Although... one time I used Havarti Dill cheese and--my-oh-my--it was delicious.

I remember those "alleged" re-sealer gadgets! HA!

  6. One of my favorite grill cheese sandwich movie scenes was in The Big Picture with Kevin Bacon. He made a grill cheese sandwich for him and his girlfriend. Sweet scene.

    1. Grilled cheese sandwich with Bacon. I haven't seen The Big Picture. I'll keep my eye open for that!

  7. I always used to get a 'cheese toastie' in the cafe at university. We do have a toastie maker but it sees relatively little use because it's cumbersome to clean up after.

    1. For sure, when a kitchen gadget is a bother to clean, I don't like messing with it!

  8. Instead of butter, I made my grilled cheese with mayonnaise. OMG. Really good.

    1. I tried mayo once on a grilled cheese sandwich. Maybe I need to try it again!

  9. I too love a good toasted cheese sarnie, but I've never seen the point of those bags. I use my George Forman grill thing. Perfect every time. Regrets? I've had a few but then again too few to mention. As for successes, I just got spiraliser so I can make courgetti spaghetti! Briliant!

    1. I don't have a George Forman grill but that sure would make a great grilled sandwich. I might have to get one!

  10. I've never heard of toaster bags (maybe they haven't got to Australia yet?) We have oven bags for roasts so I guess it's similar - I think I'd miss that little bit of butter on the bread too.

    1. They are sort of like the oven bags for roasts, but thicker and reusable... dishwasher safe too.

  11. I think it is a great controversy about using/not using butter in those cheese sandwiches... I prefer cured cheese, anyway :)

    1. Using those toaster bags certainly made me move solidly to the side of using butter on grilled sandwiches!
