Motivation: If today were the last day of my life...

This past Friday marked a year since the passing of Steve Jobs. This is from his Stanford University commencement address, June 12, 2005:
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
When I consider that it could be the last day of my life, I feel a surge of motivation, and a glimpse of what I am meant to do.

  1. Has it been a year already???

Visiting my neighbor every Sunday for the last 3 months has been a real motivator for me. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer in late April and they gave her 6 months. When she died last week, I had to count the months on my hands because I simply couldn't believe that 6 months had gone by.

If today was the last day of my life, I hope at least I had a smile and gave a smile. I'd hope I had left some kind of legacy from my time here.

On a side note, I love your husband's blog. The only trouble is that I have no place to comment. Perhaps he set it up that way for a good reason. I like his post on ECG's today. My husband nearly died because he didn't go to the ER instead of urgent care. Your husband makes a very valid point!!

    1. Sorry to hear about your neighbor. The dying teach us so much about living, huh?

My husband used to allow comments on his blog, which posted after his approval. He grew weary of sifting through the garbage comments (porn, advertisements, etc). He even had the setting to filter out computer generated messages (matching letters/numbers) yet still had tons of garbage coming through. If you know of a way that he could eliminate those types of messages, he would happily allow comments again.

    2. Oh, I don't blame him for that! Well, I don't know a whole lot about the "comments" part of setting up blogs but please pass on to him that I really enjoying his posts and if something comes up that I want to know more about medically, I'll be sure to check his blog for information.

    3. He welcomes emails and questions, so if you want to know more about something, you can contact him through the email tab at the top of his page. If it's something you want answered privately, let him know and he will respond through email. Or you can request a post covering specific medical topics.
